There is no doubt that this incredible tale of courage, goodness and temerity will not be forgotten any time soon. The first leg of the journey which led him to the mainland took 4 days and was plagued by violent snowstorms but ultimately, on the 4th of April, Jan reached Ullsfjord on the West-side of the Lyngen alps, a heavily-fortified area teeming with German soldiers. No? The Norwegian Resistance crew, using a time delay fuse, blew the boat and fled on a smaller boat.

When Baalsrud, played with resilience by Thomas Gullestad, isn’t dodging Germans, his fights against the elements bring to mind films such as “The Revenant” and even “Man in the Wilderness” or “Jeremiah Johnson.” Zwart handles these scenes with conscientious competence that makes the character’s suffering credible if not palpable. But really, the story in The 12th Man is about two men; The hunter and the hunted. (If this isn’t full service assistance, I literally do not know what is.).
