In recent times, several newcomers to showing have obtained nice coloured working geldings, which may well have been cheaper than Shire alternatives. However, it comes in seven shades, and none can better the description laid down by Hermann Biddell in Volume I of the Suffolk Horse Society Stud Book (1880): Of the chestnut there are seven shades – the dark, sometimes approaching a brown-black, mahogany, or liver colour; the dull dark chestnut; the light mealy chestnut; the red; the golden; the lemon; and the bright chestnut.
