The UX is effectively Lexus’s version of the Toyota C-HR, though the UX is longer, lower and wider than the C-HR, befitting the brand’s more luxurious and sporty aspirations. The F sport gets more sporty features and a signature F Sport design.

The 4th-generation 181-horsepower hybrid system features two electric motors in the front with the 2.0-liter gas engine and a third in back to power the rear wheels. Being the newest member of the Lexus lineup, the small crossover only made its global debut last 2018. Brake feel is better than most EVs though, another area Lexus has worked hard at over the years.

The F Sport mesh grill and bumper certainly gave it a much sportier look, unlike most basic looking crossovers today. While it may be the newest model in Lexus’ lineup, it sure has a lot to offer. Sure, you can sit quite comfortably but there is a slight issue with knee room.

The one oddity is a wheel that doesn’t seem to rise high enough if you prefer a higher driving position, but most should find a comfortable compromise. There is a bit of a drawback because of its size, though, and that translates (in)to the cabin. Bring it back to Normal or Eco-mode afterward, and you can just cruise through the city (or traffic) without having to worry about fuel economy. So when I was handed the keys to one, I wanted to find out what domestic customers were missing out on.

Unlike other models offered by the automaker today, the UX name is completely new. While the UX F Sport does have cruise control, I was surprised to find out it does not come with Lexus Safety Sense and its suite of features.

F Sport billing doesn’t result in a sporty engine note, but the muted hum is undoubtedly preferable to the raucous CVT mooing we’ve endured in the past. The new UX subcompact crossover sure has a lot to prove. The question is, is it worth the wait?

The sole transmission is an electronically-controlled CVT.

F Sport or otherwise, all UX models use a 2-litre, Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine as part of a petrol-electric drivetrain.

Built on Toyota’s lightweight global architecture, is there more to the UX than its angular styling and luxurious cabin?

If you’re a bit short, then it’s fine. Consider the UX’s performance closer in spirit to a silent EV than a crackling hot hatch, and it makes more sense. From the side, it’s hard to see the similarities between the two as even the doors appear to be different. The UX features a new full-width taillight design seen in the newer Lexus models such as the ES, LS, and the upcoming LM. When you’re not stuck in traffic though, the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter mill under the hood of the UX which produces 170 PS and 205 Nm is more than enough for the city roads.

Strangely, its responses don’t seem to change that much in Sport mode. In F Sport trim, as driven here, the UX gets dedicated suspension tuning and uprated dampers, and with the Tech and Safety Pack you get Lexus’s Adaptive Variable Suspension, using solenoids to control the movement of fluid inside the dampers. As this is the sportier F Sport version, it also gets an LFA-inspired instrument cluster and sport seats with better bolsters. But if sporty styling isn't that important for you, then the standard UX 200 will probably fit your requirements better.
