rammed earth architecture projects

We are looking to put together an interdisciplinary team for the build.

We're passionate about the potential for structural rammed earth to revolutionize the commercial built environment, so we created this blog to share our story about how we're contributing to this exciting, deep green future. For all inquiries, please use our contact page.

Telenor 345 is just part of an expansive new mixed residential and commercial suburb called Gulberg Green.

Stretching from one arroyo (watercourse) to another, the winery with active walls serves as an animal highway between the two ecological springs, supporting not only the wine industry but also the ecosystem at the Valle de Guadalupe.

Everything about it resists the loss of character widely found in contemporary mainstream construction. Since its inception in 2013, the scheme has sought to merge the practical requirements of the healthcare industry with a “model piece of architecture that is rational, tangible, modern, beautiful, and firmly linked to tradition.”. This project envisions an architecture that facilitates a smarter balance between viticulture and ecological conservation — a winery that serves not only humans and wine production, but also the animals whose habitats have been interfered with. This project envisions an architecture that facilitates a smarter balance between viticulture and ecological conservation — a winery that serves not only humans and wine production, but also the animals whose habitats have been interfered with. At SIREWALL we strive to be leaders in the evolution of building science and offer one of the highest performing structural and sustainable wall systems on the planet. Below, we describe how to build with this material. .

This project explores the possibility of manipulating rammed earth into spanning roof structures, by having it take the form of the catenary, a curve in pure compression. Built in remote North Western Australia, the building is made from locally available materials whose thermal properties help it to endure a variable climate. The overall scale of this project was 600,000 square-feet (5.57ha), by far the largest construction project implementing SIREWALL ever to be built.

You are left to your own imagination with sensitivity towards young children and nature.

Severe weather patterns such as these typically require durable construction materials and technologies - yet with the region’s difficult-to-reach location and a construction season lasting only four to six months, importing materials becomes a costly, if not impossible task.

By analyzing projects which have successfully incorporated these features into their design, this article gives an overview of how traditional materials, such as tiles, metal, rocks, bamboo, wooden sticks, timber, rammed earth and bricks are being transformed through vernacular architecture in China. Approximately 90% of the steel in the project was salvaged from the school scrap yard; 100% of the rammed earth for the walls was from the school property; 100% of the wood used for the formwork was salvaged from onsite renovation waste. Now that rammed earth has grown into the ultimate demonstration of client commitment to green building, we need to step back and consider what might have been lost along its road to recognition. Architecture and design projects that use rammed earth, including a meditation centre at Stanford University and an observation tower by the River Maas. And it gives back architectural possibilities seemingly lost in our culture of expediency and short term values.

The sustainable strategies incorporated into the building, including photovoltaic panel canopies and structural rammed earth walls, are key visual and tactile elements in the design, emphasizing the facility as both a learning environment and an educational tool. Most notably, rammed earth structures use local materials, meaning they have low embodied energy and produce little waste. We will immerse in the local environment to explore their building traditions, to discover what resources the community already has and mobilize those. This project embraced these cavities, designing them to accommodate five chosen animals within the walls of the winery — frogs, bats, bees, hummingbirds, chicken. We were so impressed by the culture of collaboration evident in the team of stakeholders—architects, lead contractor and engineer—as well as everyone’s keen interest to get hands-on experience during the test wall construction. ArchDaily 2008-2020. We spoke with the architect Luigi Rosselli to learn more about his compelling choice of material and the determining role it played in his concept design. Rammed earth was selected as the construction material for the abundance of its constituent materials as well as its ability to regulate temperature and humidity. According to the latest statistics, at least 60 million people in China are still living in various traditional rammed-earth dwellings, most of which are located in poor and rural regions. In the summer months of 2014, the team at Made In Earth had an incredible opportunity to explore earth architecture in the wonderful context of Montemoro in Portugal. earth architecture showcases a range of innovative projects and highlights the unconventional forms employed in their construction. Luckily, with help from Czech architecture firm Archide, residents were able to find that the best material for the job was one found right outside their doors: rammed earth. Constrained by a lack of transportation and resources, vernacular architecture has started adapting the distinct strategy of utilizing local materials. Relegated and replaced by modern methods of construction, the mud walls are currently re-emerging as an economic, sustainable solution, with low environmental impact. We will grant/ fund the project. Although not all elements were created using strictly SIREWALL, the sheer scale—including a 10-foot high perimeter wall, 0.47 miles (750m) in length— is truly groundbreaking. Rammed earth structures can be considered relatively basic and of simple form, or for eco enthusiasts. The pavilion brings “rammed earth construction to new heights”.
This is so we can make continual improvements to your experience of our website. We’re excited to help ambitious and innovative commercial architects to create bold new structures that are profoundly sustainable and uniquely beautiful. As with any consulting projected, this one began with a prospecting trip. Simón envisioned the design to be an open-air living space with protective roof and walls for the sleeping area. It allows for a virtually infinite variety of artistic expression. The design is an experimental desert dwelling for winter residents at Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

This week, we're highlighting a selection of the best images of projects built using rammed earth. Pakistan is an inspiring place to work and we were impressed with the high level of commitment and innovation toward sustainability and low-enviromental-impact development. At over 3500 meters above sea level, the region includes terrain consisting of steep cliffs and wide valleys, and an extreme climate to match: temperatures often reach +30 degrees celsius in the summer months and drop to -30 degrees celsius in the winter. Rammed earth — masses made from compacted soil, sand, clay, gravel and other natural raw materials, typically exists as walls, given they can withstand only vertical compression forces. In 2013 when we first arrived, infrastructure was just being established, including solar-powered lighting on every street. Commonly used especially in China, the technique was applied to both ancient monuments and vernacular architecture, with the Great Wall utilizing the technique. Today it’s on the drafting boards of some of the world’s leading architects. Each Pavilion (selected entries) will be built periodically (one by one) and will amaze the young children for 3-4 months at Red Soil Nature Play. Firstly, the intersection leads to a thickening of the wall, which serves as thermal mass for the regulation of indoor climate to host thermally-sensitive wine production stages like barrel aging, against the region’s diurnal temperature fluctuations. The biggest rammed earth project in the world! The Rabbit Architects’s office for Association Casa-HAS | In collaboration with Touraterre | Avignon, France This article is part of our new "Material Focus" series, which asks architects to elaborate on the thought process behind their material choices and sheds light on the steps required to get buildings actually built.
