Early on while I was reading Daphne du Maurier's The Parasites, I knew that this fictional novel had something of Daphne, herself in it, how much we have no idea but there are many things that point to her family and her life. It was funny, touching, and memorable. Alice thought marrying attractive American Bennett Van Cleve would be her ticket out of her stifling life in England. As with many of Daphne Du Maurier's works, when I reached the end I felt like I could have continued reading for a lot longer, partly because it was rather abrupt and inconclusive, and partly because I was enjoying the book very much and wanted to continue following the lives of these characters. (page 61). I read this immediately after I had read Captivated with its description of the entanglements between The playwright J.M. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. I didn't find the Delaneys annoying .. yes, they were all a bit weak, hopeless and self-centred .. eternal children in a world of grown-ups .. maybe that's precisely what I did like about them, because I could relate to it. I couldn't put it down. Two of them are garbage people, the third is a self-denying loser. Share this. There is also humour to balance the drama, such as the hilarious scene where the Delaneys visit the Wyndham family soon after Maria has married Charles. Basing her novel on the true story of the Pack Horse Library Project established by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, Moyes (Still Me, 2018, etc.) Its an impressionistic backward glance by three siblings to their bohemian childhood and youths and then how each in their own way try to make a way for themselves in a world that seems to find them odd and perhaps freakish. I really can’t get enough of this woman’s writing and to think I’m almost at the half way stage of her bibliography is heartbreaking – the next du Maurier can’t come soon enough! Between them they have three children – Maria, who is Pappy’s daughter; Niall, who is Mama’s son; and Celia who is their daughter. Niall is a. I really enjoyed this. “Watch that boy. Tim Heald on Daphne du Maurier, The Parasites. The talented Bennett fuels her fiction with secrets—first in her lauded debut, The Mothers (2016), and now in the assured and magnetic story of the Vignes sisters, light-skinned women parked on opposite sides of the color line. Maria and Niall are step siblings and Celia, their half sister. I really enjoyed this. [After only a short while, Maria comes to terms with her divorce, heads back onstage, and prompty moves onto the next chapter of her life, while Niall sets off in his sailboat for France, knowing that he probably won't make it and as the water starts seeping in he simply let's it all go. Celia, the least objectionable of the lot, plays the role of half-hearted peacemaker and feckless victim. There was nothing "spooky" about this story, as most of her other novels seem to have that common theme. You are doubly, triply parasitic; first, because you’ve traded ever since childhood on that seed of talent you had the luck to inherit from your fantastic forbears; secondly, because you’ve none of you done a stroke of ordinary honest work in your lives, but batten upon us, the fool public who allow you to exist; and thirdly, because you prey upon each other, the three of you, living in a world of fantasy which you have created for yourselves and which bears no relation to anything in heaven or on earth.
